Floating halos dance to the sound of the music in SKALAR project by Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray

Dozens of kinetic mirrors suspended from the ceiling move to the sound of the beat, creating an immersive live show.

Exhibition: SKALAR
Artist: Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray
Where: Kraftwerk Berlin

The audio-visual installation embodies the psycho-evolutionary theory about the essence of human emotions and perception, by American psychologist Robert Plutchik. The monumental art piece made by artist Christopher Bauder and musician Kangding Ray was on view in 2014 at the Kraftwerk Berlin industrial venue.

Round, spheric mirrors are suspended from the top of a venue, constantly moving to the sound of the beat. Slow and atmospheric parts of the soundtrack are accompanied by subtle movement of lights. As the music gets faster, the spheres are also changing pace, while constantly interacting with beams of multi-coloured laser lights. The light bounces of the mirrors, exploding throughout the venue, painting the dark surrounding into shades of blue, green, yellow… The elements of the artwork work in sync, guiding the viewers through the repertoire of human emotions.

Multidimensional SKALAR installation represents a joint effort of artist Christopher Bauder, in charge of the visual elements and musician Kangding Ray, who created an ephemeral soundtrack for the artwork. The piece was originally set up in Kraftwerk Berlin in 2014 and has been touring the world ever since. The artwork’s creators, manipulate the elements of the installation (the music, the lights, the mirrors) in real-time, which makes every SKALAR exhibition a unique experience. Between a light show and a music concert, the combination of the sound, physical elements and light is truly a feast for all senses.
